Assessment: Graphic Novel Analysis and Creation
Part 1: Graphic Novel Analysis (Formative Assessment) Students will choose a graphic novel from a provided list or of their own choice and analyze its elements. They will write a short essay addressing the following prompts: 1. Describe the panel layout and visual storytelling techniques used in the graphic novel. How do these elements contribute to the overall narrative? 2. Analyze the dialogue in the graphic novel. How does it reveal the characters’ personalities and advance the plot? 3. Discuss the character development in the graphic novel. How do the characters evolve throughout the story? 4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the graphic novel in conveying its message or theme. Provide specific examples to support your analysis.
Part 2: Graphic Novel Creation (Summative Assessment) Students will create their own short graphic novel, applying the elements discussed throughout the unit. They will follow these steps: 1. Brainstorm and outline a story idea for their graphic novel, including a clear narrative and theme. 2. Create a storyboard, planning the panel layout and visual storytelling for each page. 3. Develop dialogue that effectively reveals the characters’ personalities and advances the plot. 4. Draw and color the panels, paying attention to details and visual storytelling techniques. 5. Assemble the pages into a final graphic novel, ensuring coherence and flow. 6. Present their graphic novel to the class, explaining their creative choices and how they utilized the elements of a graphic novel.
