Objective: To learn about and celebrate different cultures around the world.

Day 1: Introduction to Celebrations Around the World

  • Introduce Robert Burns Day, explain who he was and what the day celebrates
  • Introduce Chinese New Year, explain who traditionally celebrates it and why

Day 2: Robert Burns Day

  • Watch a short video about Robert Burns
  • Go over highlights of Robert Burns poem, “A Red, Red Rose”
  • Have students draw pictures to illustrate key points of the poem
  • If time allows, have the students recite the poem as a class

Day 3: Chinese New Year

  • Show a presentation of the history and traditions of Chinese New Year
  • Explain the meaning of different animals in the Chinese zodiac
  • Learn the Chinese dragon dance
  • Have the students create depictions of the dragon dance

Day 4: Celebrate!

  • Have a class party to celebrate Robert Burns Day and Chinese New Year
  • Play music from both cultures
  • Have traditional food
  • Wear traditional clothes
  • Play traditional games
