Objective: To learn about and celebrate different cultures around the world.
Day 1: Introduction to Celebrations Around the World
- Introduce Robert Burns Day, explain who he was and what the day celebrates
- Introduce Chinese New Year, explain who traditionally celebrates it and why
Day 2: Robert Burns Day
- Watch a short video about Robert Burns
- Go over highlights of Robert Burns poem, “A Red, Red Rose”
- Have students draw pictures to illustrate key points of the poem
- If time allows, have the students recite the poem as a class
Day 3: Chinese New Year
- Show a presentation of the history and traditions of Chinese New Year
- Explain the meaning of different animals in the Chinese zodiac
- Learn the Chinese dragon dance
- Have the students create depictions of the dragon dance
Day 4: Celebrate!
- Have a class party to celebrate Robert Burns Day and Chinese New Year
- Play music from both cultures
- Have traditional food
- Wear traditional clothes
- Play traditional games
