Unit Plan: Made in Scotland Objective: Students will gain an understanding of Scotland’s history, its culture, and its contributions to the world through the examination of its inventions, music, art, and poetry.

Day 1: Class Introduction Time: 45 Minutes Materials: Worksheets and reading materials

•Welcome students to the class, have them introduce themselves and discuss what they already know about Scotland. •In a class discussion, introduce Scotland’s history and culture, leading up to its intentional inventions, music, art, and poetry.
•Introduce concepts of inventions, music, art, and poetry in Scotland, ask students to think about what this could mean.
•Brainstorm a list of Scottish inventions, music, art, and poetry. •Hand out worksheets with some information on Scottish inventions and give students time to read and fill in their worksheets.

Day 2: Exploring Scotland’s Inventions Time: 45 Minutes Materials: Science demonstrations, worksheets

•Review the list of inventions brainstormed yesterday. •Do a few science demonstrations showing examples of important inventions that originated in Scotland. •Show a video of different types of inventions and have students recall the ones discussed yesterday. •Do a quick quiz on the different inventions and discuss the answers afterwards. •Discuss how these inventions have shaped Scotland and have an open discussion on what they thought of each invention.

Day 3: Music, Art, and Poetry from Scotland Time: 45 minutes Materials: Examples of music, art, and poetry from Scotland

•Introduce each type of art and discuss how the Scottish culture informs each one.
•Show examples of music, art, and poetry from Scotland, discuss how these pieces of art reflect Scotland’s culture and how they might be different from other countries or cultures. •Ask students to discuss how art can be used to express culture. •Have a discussion about how the use of art in Scotland has changed over time and which forms of art and music still remain popular today.

Day 4: Time: 45 minutes Materials: Worksheets, reading materials

•Hand out worksheets with some background information on famous Scottish inventions, art, music, and poetry. •Discuss the worksheets and have students fill in any information they can find. •Discuss how these inventions have changed Scotland and the world as a whole. •Discuss the importance of art and music in Scottish culture. •Lead a discussion on how inventions, art, music, and poetry have helped shape the identity of Scotland.

Day 5: Time: 45 minutes Materials: Worksheets, reading materials, art supplies

•Lead a discussion on how inventions, art, music, and poetry have helped shape the identity of Scotland. •Have students create their own pieces of art, music, and/or poetry that reflects how they see Scotland. •Give students time to work on their projects and discuss them with the group.

Day 6: Time: 45 minutes Materials: none

•Bring in guest speakers (local musicians, inventors, artists, or poets) to talk about their experiences in Scotland and their contributions to the country. •Have an open discussion with the students about the guest speakers and their comments. •Review the concepts of the unit and have students reflect on their own work. •Have students share their works of art, music, and/or poetry with the class. •Ask students to explain how they see Scotland and its contributions to the world through this unit.

Closure:

Have students take a final assessment to test their knowledge of Scotland’s inventions, music, art, and poetry. Review the assessment and discuss any areas that need improvement. Wrapping up the class with a discussion on the overall importance of Scotland’s contribution to the world.
