Unit Plan: Day 1: Introduction to the Unit (Whole Group) * Talking circles: Have students discuss and share their current level of knowledge about Scotland * Mini-lesson: Introduce the history and culture of Scotland * Read the Stephen Speaks poem “Heritage”

Day 2-3: Scottish Inventions (Research and Presentations) * Research task: Divide the class into groups and have them research inventions made in Scotland * Presentations: Have each group present their findings

Day 4-5: Scottish Music and Art (Small Groups) * Listening activities: Have student small groups listen to and analyze traditional and contemporary Scottish music and art * Writing activities: Have students listen to a piece of music and then illustrate or write a poem in response to the music

Day 6-7: Scottish Poetry (Analysis + Performance) * Analyze poetry: Have students analyze a selection of poetry from Scotland, focusing on the major themes * Poetry performance: Students create groups and take turns performing the poems they have chosen

Day 8: Wrap-Up (Whole Group) * Group discussion: Allow students to share how the unit changed their understanding of Scotland * Debrief: Have students reflect on what they have learned throughout the unit * Project showcase: Present the inventions, music, art and poetry created during the unit
