Overall Aim/Objective: To foster an understanding among students of Scotland’s current inventors and their achievements.

The lesson plan should include four essential parts: a learning objective (for example: to learn about key Scottish inventors and develop critical thinking skills around the topic), lesson materials (for example: video clips and worksheets related to Scottish inventors) activities (for example: discussion, presentation and research tasks) and assessment (for example: written review of an invention and its impact on society).

Unit Plan Outline 

Lesson 1: Introduction to Inventing Objective: To introduce students to the concept of inventing and the pioneering inventors from Scotland Materials: Video on Scottish inventors, worksheet on key Scottish inventors Activities: • Watch a video clip on Scottish inventors • Discuss the impact of their inventions on society • Complete a worksheet to list down key Scottish inventors Assessment: Pick an invention (from the worksheet) and write a review on its impact on society

Lesson 2: Inventor Research Objective: To develop students’ research skills around the topic of inventing Materials: Access to online resources, research worksheet Activities: • Each student should pick an inventor to research • Allow students time to conduct their own research using the provided worksheet • Share the findings in class Assessment: Have each student create a one-page summary on their inventor and present to the class

Lesson 3: Analysis and Debates Objective: To promote critical thinking and discussion around inventors Materials: Prompts for debates Activities: • Divide the class into pairs and assign partners an inventor to debate • Give each pair an invention and outcomes of the related debate • Ask the pairs to share their findings with the class and engage in an open debate Assessment: Have each student create a two-pages paper on their invention and their assessment of its impact on society

Lesson 4: Inventor Projects Objective: To foster creativity around inventors and their work Materials: Ideas for different projects Activities: • Ask students to pick an inventor to investigate and come up with a creative project to present to the class • Allow time for students to brainstorm ideas and come up with a detailed plan to present their project
Assessment: Each student should create a detailed presentation on their inventor, and then present their project to the class
