Act 1, Scene 1

Summary: In the first act of Macbeth, three witches (the Weird Sisters) gather on a heath and discuss when and where they will meet again. Meanwhile, King Duncan hears from a wounded captain about Macbeth's bravery in battle against the traitorous Macdonwald and the Norwegian forces. Duncan decides to make Macbeth a Thane of Cawdor to reward his loyalty. The witches decide to meet Macbeth at the end of the scene.

Act 1, Scene 2

Summary: In this second act of Macbeth, a messenger tells Macbeth that he has been named thane of Cawdor by King Duncan. Macbeth is overwhelmed with excitement and ambition until he hears news from the witches that he will be named king. Macbeth's ambition is further aroused when his wife, Lady Macbeth, reminds him to seize the opportunity. As the scene ends, Macbeth is determined to become king.
