Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with sentences using “such…that” and “so…that”

  3. Write the following sentence on the board: “The movie was such a disappointment that I fell asleep.” Ask the students to identify the cause and effect in this sentence.

  4. Provide the students with handouts containing sentences using “such…that” and “so…that”. Ask them to identify the cause and effect in each sentence.

  5. Divide the students into pairs and ask them to create their own sentences using “such…that” and “so…that”. Encourage them to be creative and use a variety of verbs and adjectives.

  6. Have each pair share their sentences with the class. As a class, identify the cause and effect in each sentence.

  7. To wrap up the activity, ask the students to write a short paragraph using “such…that” or “so…that” to describe a cause and effect relationship. Have them share their paragraphs with the class.

Assessment: Observe the students during the activity to ensure they understand the cause and effect relationship in each sentence. Evaluate their written paragraphs for correct use of “such…that” and “so…that”.
