Procedure:

Begin by introducing the structures “such…that” and “so…that” to the students. Explain that these structures are used to describe cause and effect relationships.

Write the following sentence on the board: “The rain was so heavy that the streets flooded.” Ask the students to identify the cause and effect in this sentence.

Write the following sentence on the board: “The movie was such a disappointment that I fell asleep.” Ask the students to identify the cause and effect in this sentence.

Provide the students with handouts containing sentences using “such…that” and “so…that”. Ask them to identify the cause and effect in each sentence.

Divide the students into pairs and ask them to create their own sentences using “such…that” and “so…that”. Encourage them to be creative and use a variety of verbs and adjectives.

Have each pair share their sentences with the class. As a class, identify the cause and effect in each sentence.
