Activity: Business Language Role-Play
Objective: To enhance advanced English students’ proficiency in using business language in real-life scenarios.
Instructions:
-
Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
-
Provide each group with a scenario related to a business setting. You can either create your own scenarios or use the following examples: a. Negotiating a business deal with a potential client. b. Conducting a job interview for a managerial position. c. Resolving a conflict between team members in a workplace. d. Presenting a business proposal to a board of directors. e. Participating in a business conference or networking event.
-
Assign roles to each group member, such as a salesperson, client, interviewer, interviewee, team leader, team member, presenter, or audience member.
-
Give the groups some time to prepare for their role-play. Encourage them to research appropriate business vocabulary, phrases, and etiquette that would be relevant to their scenario.
-
Once the groups are ready, have them perform their role-plays in front of the class. Alternatively, you can conduct the role-plays in a more private setting, such as during a virtual class session.
-
After each role-play, provide constructive feedback to the groups, focusing on their use of business language, fluency, and appropriateness in the given scenario.
-
Encourage the students to reflect on their performance and discuss what they learned from the activity. Ask them to identify areas where they excelled and areas where they could improve.
-
To further enhance the activity, you can also assign a written reflection task where students individually analyze their role-play experience, highlighting the challenges they faced and strategies they used to overcome them. They can also suggest ways to improve their business language skills in the future.
Note: It is essential to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment during the role-plays to encourage students to take risks and practice their business language skills without fear of making mistakes.
