Activity: Expressing Wishes, Regret and Criticism using the verb wish or if only

Objective: To practice expressing wishes, regret and criticism using the verb wish or if only.

Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with sentences to complete.

Procedure:

  1. Begin by introducing the topic of expressing wishes, regret and criticism using the verb wish or if only. Explain that these expressions are used to talk about things that we wish were different, things we regret doing or not doing, and things we criticize about ourselves or others.

  2. Write the following examples on the board:

  • I wish I had studied harder for the exam.
  • If only I had listened to my parents’ advice.
  • I wish I could speak Spanish fluently.
  • If only he had been more honest with me.
  • I wish I had saved more money.
  • If only she had taken the job offer.
  1. Ask the students to work in pairs or small groups and complete the following sentences using the verb wish or if only:
  • I wish _____________.
  • If only _____________.
  1. After the students have completed the sentences, ask them to share their answers with the class. Encourage them to explain why they chose those particular wishes or regrets.

  2. Next, write the following examples on the board:

  • I wish you wouldn’t interrupt me when I’m speaking.
  • If only he would stop being so lazy.
  • I wish they would recycle more.
  • If only she wouldn’t be so critical of others.
  • I wish he wouldn’t smoke in the house.
  • If only they would be more considerate of others.
  1. Ask the students to work in pairs or small groups and complete the following sentences using the verb wish or if only:
  • I wish _____________.
  • If only _____________.
  1. After the students have completed the sentences, ask them to share their answers with the class. Encourage them to explain why they chose those particular criticisms.

  2. Finally, ask the students to write a short paragraph expressing a wish, regret or criticism using the verb wish or if only. Encourage them to be creative and use their own experiences and opinions.

  3. After the students have finished writing, ask them to share their paragraphs with the class. Encourage them to listen to each other and ask questions or give feedback.

Assessment: Observe the students’ participation in the activity and their ability to express wishes, regret and criticism using the verb wish or if only. Provide feedback and correction as needed.
