Materials:

  • Two wooden boards
  • Two identical blocks of wood
  • Dowel rod
  • Hammer

Instructions:

  1. Place the two wooden boards on the ground side by side, approximately one foot apart.

  2. Place one block of wood in the middle of each board. Position them such that the blocks are facing each other.

  3. Insert the dowel rod through the top of one block, and into the bottom of the other block.

  4. Hammer the dowel rod into the two blocks, securing them in place.

  5. Hold one of the blocks, so that the dowel rod is perpendicular to the ground, maintaining the same level of force on each block.

  6. Gently swing the dowel rod in an arc, maintaining your force on each block.

  7. Observe how the force on both blocks remains the same throughout the arc, demonstrating the conservation of momentum.
