Activity: Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Objective: To teach students the difference between present simple and present continuous tenses.

Materials: Whiteboard, markers, flashcards, and worksheets.

Procedure:

  1. Start by introducing the present simple and present continuous tenses to the students. Write examples of both tenses on the board.

  2. Explain that the present simple is used to describe habitual actions, routines, and facts. The present continuous is used to describe actions that are happening now or in progress.

  3. Use flashcards to illustrate the difference between the two tenses. For example, show a picture of a person reading a book and say, “He is reading a book” (present continuous) and then show a picture of the same person reading a book every day and say, “He reads a book every day” (present simple).

  4. Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a worksheet with sentences in both present simple and present continuous tenses. Ask them to identify the tense of each sentence and write it down.

  5. After the students have completed the worksheet, review the answers as a class. Ask the students to explain why they chose a particular tense for each sentence.

  6. To reinforce the concept, play a game of “Simon Says” using present simple and present continuous sentences. For example, “Simon says, ‘I am jumping up and down’” (present continuous) or “Simon says, ‘I eat breakfast every day’” (present simple).

  7. Finally, ask the students to write a short paragraph about their daily routine using both present simple and present continuous tenses.

Assessment: Monitor the students’ participation during the activity and check their worksheets and paragraphs for accuracy.
