Begin by explaining what decimal numbers are and what a decimal point is. Introduce them to the concept of place value and talk about each of the positions shown in the diagram.
-
Ask the students to individually write down a decimal number from 0.1 to 0.9 in their notebooks. Help the students, who do not understand the concept, by explaining what the decimal point signifies.
-
Once the students have written down their decimal numbers, form groups of four pairs to practice writing and ordering decimal numbers. Give each group a sheet of paper and have them work on it together.
-
Have the students play a game to identify the lesser and greater of two decimal numbers. Provide the students with a list of decimal numbers and ask them to rank them in order from smallest to the largest.
-
Finally, give each group a jumbled up set of decimal numbers and ask them to arrange them in the right order.
-
Provide feedback and reward the groups who did well with a small prize. Ask some of the students to explain their understanding of decimal numbers and how they solved the problem.
