Activity: Vocabulary Story Building
Objective: To teach and reinforce new vocabulary words through a creative and interactive activity.
Materials needed: A whiteboard or a digital whiteboard tool, markers or a digital drawing tool, and a list of the vocabulary words.
Instructions:
-
Begin the online class by introducing yourself and briefly explaining the activity to the student.
-
Display the list of vocabulary words on the whiteboard or share it with the student.
-
Explain that you will be creating a story together using these words. Each word will be used at least once in the story.
-
Start by writing the word “Once” on the whiteboard and ask the student to add the next word to continue the story. For example, the student might choose “upon” as the next word.
-
Continue taking turns with the student, adding one word at a time to build the story. Encourage the student to use their creativity and imagination to make the story engaging.
-
As you progress, periodically review the words that have been used in the story so far. Ask the student to define or provide a synonym for each word to reinforce their understanding.
-
If the student struggles to come up with a word, provide hints or examples to guide them. For instance, if the student is stuck after the word “tree,” you can say, “Think about something that is often found in a forest.”
-
Continue building the story until you have used all the vocabulary words. Make sure to maintain a coherent storyline and encourage the student to do the same.
-
Once the story is complete, read it aloud together, taking turns. This will help reinforce the vocabulary words in context.
-
After reading the story, discuss any unfamiliar words or phrases. Encourage the student to ask questions and provide explanations if needed.
-
To conclude the activity, ask the student to write a short paragraph summarizing the story using as many vocabulary words as possible. This will serve as a writing exercise and further reinforce the newly learned words.
-
Provide feedback and praise the student for their participation and creativity throughout the activity.
Note: Feel free to modify the activity based on the student’s level and preferences. You can also adapt it to include additional vocabulary words if desired.
