Title: Exploring Number Patterns and Comparing Numbers

Grade Level: 4th grade

Objective: - Students will be able to compare and order numbers up to 10,000. - Students will identify and extend number patterns using addition and subtraction.

Materials: - Math in Focus Chapter 6 Lesson 3 textbook or online resources - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or colored pencils - Number cards (0-9) - Manipulatives (optional)

Warm-up (5 minutes): 1. Display a number pattern on the board: 2, 5, 8, 11, __, __, __. 2. Ask students to identify the pattern and predict the next three numbers. 3. Discuss their answers as a class, emphasizing the pattern of adding 3 to each number.

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Review the concepts of comparing and ordering numbers. 2. Explain that today, we will focus on comparing and ordering numbers up to 10,000. 3. Discuss the importance of recognizing number patterns and how they can help us solve problems more efficiently.

Instruction (20 minutes): 1. Read and discuss Math in Focus Chapter 6 Lesson 3 with the students, highlighting the key concepts and vocabulary. 2. Model how to compare and order numbers using place value and number lines. 3. Provide examples and guide students through the process of comparing and ordering numbers independently. 4. Introduce the concept of number patterns and how they can be identified and extended. 5. Demonstrate how to identify patterns by looking for repeated addition or subtraction. 6. Guide students through identifying and extending number patterns using addition and subtraction.

Practice (15 minutes): 1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 2. Distribute number cards (0-9) to each group. 3. Instruct students to create their own number patterns using the number cards. 4. Encourage them to extend the patterns by adding or subtracting the same number each time. 5. Have each group share their patterns with the class, explaining the rule they used to create the pattern.

Application (10 minutes): 1. Provide each student with a worksheet containing a variety of number patterns. 2. Instruct students to identify the pattern and extend it by filling in the missing numbers. 3. Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and monitor progress. 4. Review the completed worksheets as a class, discussing the different patterns and strategies used.

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Recap the key concepts learned in the lesson: comparing and ordering numbers, identifying number patterns, and extending patterns using addition and subtraction. 2. Discuss real-life situations where these skills can be applied, such as budgeting or analyzing data. 3. Encourage students to practice these skills outside of the classroom, using online resources or math games.

Extension Activity: For advanced students, provide a challenge activity where they have to create a number pattern using multiplication or division. They can then exchange patterns with a partner and try to identify the rule and extend the pattern.
