Title: “So That’s How It’s Done!”

Objective: To help students understand and use the structure “such…that” and “so…that” in sentences.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Index cards - Timer

Instructions:

  1. Begin by explaining the structure of “such…that” and “so…that” to the students. Give them examples of each, such as:
  • Such was his determination that he never gave up.
  • The weather was so hot that we had to stay indoors.
  1. Divide the class into two teams. Each team will have a turn to come up with a sentence using either “such…that” or “so…that”.

  2. Give each team an index card with a topic written on it. The topics can be anything from animals to sports to food.

  3. Set a timer for 5 minutes and have the teams work together to come up with a sentence using the topic on their card and either “such…that” or “so…that”.

  4. After the 5 minutes are up, have each team present their sentence to the class. The other team will then have to guess whether the sentence uses “such…that” or “so…that”.

  5. If the guessing team gets it right, they earn a point. If they get it wrong, the other team earns a point.

  6. Repeat steps 3-6 with different topics and switch which team goes first.

  7. At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins.

Variations:

  • For older or more advanced students, you can make the game more challenging by adding a rule that the sentence must also include a specific grammar point, such as a certain verb tense or adjective.
  • To make the game more interactive, you can have students act out their sentences or draw pictures to go along with them.
