Title: Separable and Nonseparable Phrasal Verbs

Grade Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Objective: Students will be able to distinguish between separable and nonseparable phrasal verbs and use them correctly in context.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handout with examples of separable and nonseparable phrasal verbs - Worksheet with practice exercises - Reading passage with phrasal verbs

Warm-up (5 minutes): - Write the following phrasal verbs on the board: turn off, put on, take out, look up, give up. - Ask students to work in pairs and discuss whether they think these phrasal verbs are separable or nonseparable. - After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their answers and explain their reasoning.

Introduction (10 minutes): - Explain to students that phrasal verbs are made up of a verb and a particle (preposition or adverb) that together have a different meaning than the individual words. - Tell students that there are two types of phrasal verbs: separable and nonseparable. - Write the following examples on the board: - Separable: I turned off the lights. / I turned the lights off. - Nonseparable: I ran into my old friend. / I can’t put up with his behavior. - Explain that with separable phrasal verbs, the particle can be separated from the verb and placed in different parts of the sentence. With nonseparable phrasal verbs, the particle cannot be separated from the verb.

Guided Practice (15 minutes): - Distribute the handout with examples of separable and nonseparable phrasal verbs. - Ask students to work in pairs and identify which phrasal verbs are separable and which are nonseparable. - After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their answers and explain their reasoning. - Clarify any misunderstandings and provide additional examples if necessary.

Independent Practice (15 minutes): - Distribute the worksheet with practice exercises. - Ask students to complete the exercises individually. - After a few minutes, review the answers as a class and provide feedback.

Application (15 minutes): - Distribute a reading passage that contains phrasal verbs. - Ask students to read the passage and identify which phrasal verbs are separable and which are nonseparable. - After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share their answers and explain their reasoning. - Discuss the meaning of the phrasal verbs in context and how they contribute to the overall meaning of the passage.

Closure (5 minutes): - Ask students to reflect on what they learned about separable and nonseparable phrasal verbs. - Encourage them to use phrasal verbs in their own writing and speaking to improve their fluency and accuracy.

Assessment: - Observe students during the warm-up, guided practice, and independent practice to assess their understanding of separable and nonseparable phrasal verbs. - Evaluate their performance on the worksheet and reading passage to determine if they can use phrasal verbs correctly in context.
