Title: Past Simple vs. Present Perfect Information Gap
Objective: To practice forming questions in the past simple and present perfect tenses and to provide appropriate answers.
Instructions: 1. Divide the class into pairs, A and B. 2. Provide each student with a worksheet containing a list of statements in the past simple and present perfect tenses. (See example below) 3. Explain that Student A will be the questioner, and Student B will be the responder. 4. Student A’s task is to form questions based on the statements on their worksheet, using either the past simple or present perfect tense. 5. Student B’s task is to answer the questions using the information provided in the statements. 6. Students should take turns asking and answering questions until they have completed all the statements. 7. Encourage students to ask follow-up questions to gather more information if needed. 8. After completing the activity, have students switch roles and repeat the process.
Example Worksheet:
Student A (Questioner): 1. I visited Paris last year. 2. She has never been to a concert. 3. They watched a movie yesterday. 4. He has already finished his homework. 5. Student B (Responder): 1. __________? 2. __________? 3. __________? 4. __________? 5. __________? 6. __________? 7. __________? 8. __________? 9. __________? 10. __________?
Note: The blank spaces on Student B’s worksheet are for writing the answers to the questions asked by Student A.
Extension: To further challenge the students, you can add a time limit for each question and answer exchange. This will encourage them to think quickly and respond promptly. Additionally, you can have students switch partners and repeat the activity with a new set of statements to practice with different classmates.
