Preparation -Duration: 60 min -Instructional goal: To teach primary 5th grade students about ethical values, specifically respecting the rights of others online and the principles of fair use. -Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to define and explain the importance of respecting the rights of others online. 2. Students will be able to identify situations that may arise as a result of violating ethical principles. 3. Students will be able to explain the principles of fair use and provide examples of situations that may occur if ethical rules are not followed. -Previous activity: None -Next activity: Students will be asked to create a poster or video that promotes ethical values online. -Instructional materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts, internet access, examples of ethical violations online. -Learner Characteristics: Primary 5th grade students who are familiar with using the internet and technology. -Time chart: Introduction - 10 min Information Sharing and Application - 40 min Closure - 5 min Assessment - 5 min
II. Introduction -Motivating students: Begin by asking students if they have ever seen or experienced someone being treated unfairly online. Ask them how it made them feel and if they think it was right or wrong. -Informing students of the objectives: Explain that today’s lesson will focus on ethical values, specifically respecting the rights of others online and the principles of fair use. -Helping students recall prerequisites: Ask students if they remember what fair use means and if they have ever heard of ethical values.
III. Information Sharing and Application -Presenting information: Use the whiteboard to write the two main topics: Respecting the rights of others online and Situations to be encountered as a result of violation of ethical principles. Explain each topic in detail, providing examples of ethical violations online and how they can affect others. -Providing practice and feedback: Divide students into pairs and give them a handout with scenarios of ethical violations online. Have them discuss the scenarios and come up with ways to handle the situation ethically. Afterward, have each pair share their ideas with the class and provide feedback on their responses.
IV. Closure -Summarizing the lesson: Ask students to summarize what they learned about ethical values and how they can apply them online. Write their responses on the whiteboard.
V. Assessment -Evaluating student learning: Have students write a short paragraph about what they learned in today’s lesson and how they plan to apply ethical values online. -Providing feedback to students: Provide feedback on their responses, highlighting areas where they did well and areas for improvement. -Identifying areas for improvement: If necessary, review the topics covered in the lesson and provide additional resources for students to learn more about ethical values online.
