Lesson Plan: Finding Main Idea and Details
Grade Level: 5th Grade Subject: Reading
Objective: - Students will be able to identify the main idea and supporting details in a given reading passage. - Students will be able to use graphic organizers to organize their thoughts and findings. - Students will be able to ask and answer questions to deepen their understanding of the main idea and details.

Introduction: 1. Begin the lesson by explaining to students the importance of finding the main idea and details in a text. Emphasize that understanding the main idea helps us comprehend the overall message of the passage, while identifying supporting details helps us gain a deeper understanding of the main idea. 2. Show students a sample reading passage and ask them to read it silently. Afterward, ask them to share what they think the main idea and supporting details might be. Discuss their responses as a class. 3. Introduce the concept of graphic organizers as a tool to help organize thoughts and findings. Explain that graphic organizers visually represent the main idea and details, making it easier to understand and remember the information.
Modeling: 1. Choose a reading passage that is appropriate for the 5th-grade level and display it on the board or projector. 2. Read the passage aloud to the class, pausing at key points to model how to identify the main idea and supporting details. 3. Use a graphic organizer (e.g., a T-chart, a web, or a Venn diagram) to visually represent the main idea and details. Think aloud as you fill in the graphic organizer, explaining your thought process. 4. After completing the graphic organizer, review it with the class, highlighting the main idea and supporting details.
Guided Practice: 1. Provide each student with a copy of a different reading passage and a graphic organizer. 2. Instruct students to read the passage independently and use the graphic organizer to identify the main idea and supporting details. 3. Circulate around the classroom, providing guidance and support as needed. 4. Once students have completed their graphic organizers, bring the class back together and discuss their findings. Encourage students to share their main ideas and supporting details, and ask questions to deepen their understanding.
Small Group Instruction Lesson 1: 1. Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students. 2. Provide each group with a different reading passage and a set of questions related to finding the main idea and details. 3. Instruct students to read the passage together and discuss their answers to the questions. 4. Circulate among the groups, offering guidance and support as needed. 5. After the groups have completed their discussions, bring the class back together and have each group share their main ideas and supporting details.
