Koalas are one of the most recognizable Australian animals, and have a long history on this continent.
Koalas have a rather unique appearance, with a bulky body, short legs and round ears. They have soft grey or brown fur, and a white belly, and their claws are specially adapted for climbing and gripping onto trees. They also have a round nose and small black eyes.
Koalas are herbivores, so they feed primarily on eucalyptus leaves. They will also sometimes eat wattle, tea tree and different types of grass.
Their natural habitat is open eucalyptus woodlands and rainforests, and they can usually be found living in the tops of eucalyptus trees.
Koalas are usually quite shy and solitary animals, but they are social and will sometimes gather together in small groups.
The biggest threats to koalas survival are habitat loss, climate change and disease.
Here’s a fun fact about koalas- they sleep for up to 18 hours a day!
