Exercise: Analyzing Character Development in a Movie

Objective: To develop critical thinking skills and enhance understanding of character development in a movie.

Instructions: 1. Choose a movie that is suitable for high school students and has well-developed characters. It can be a film that the students have recently watched or a popular movie that most of them are familiar with. 2. Divide the students into small groups of 3-4 members. 3. Provide each group with a set of questions to guide their analysis of character development. These questions can include:

a. How would you describe the main character(s) at the beginning of the movie? What are their personality traits, strengths, and weaknesses? b. What events or experiences shape the main character(s) throughout the movie? How do these events impact their growth and development? c. Identify any conflicts or challenges the main character(s) face. How do they respond to these challenges, and how does it affect their development? d. Are there any significant relationships or interactions that contribute to the character development? How do these relationships evolve over time? e. How does the main character(s) change or evolve by the end of the movie? Are there any lessons they learn or personal transformations they undergo?

  1. Instruct each group to discuss and analyze the character development in the movie based on the provided questions. Encourage them to provide specific examples and evidence from the film to support their analysis.
  2. After the group discussions, bring the students together for a class discussion. Ask each group to share their findings and insights on the character development in the movie.
  3. Facilitate a discussion by asking additional questions such as:

    a. Did the character development in the movie surprise you? Why or why not? b. How did the character development contribute to the overall plot and themes of the movie? c. Were there any characters whose development you found particularly interesting or relatable? Why? d. How does the character development in the movie reflect real-life experiences or challenges that high school students might face?

  4. Conclude the exercise by encouraging students to reflect on the importance of character development in storytelling and its impact on their own lives.

Note: It is essential to choose a movie that is appropriate for high school students and aligns with the educational objectives of the exercise. Additionally, ensure that students have access to the movie or have recently watched it to effectively participate in the exercise.
