Activity 1: Scale and Distance Map: Provide students with a map of their school campus with a scale of 1 inch = 100 feet. Include landmarks such as the gym, cafeteria, and library.

Questions: 1. How far is it from the gym to the cafeteria in real life if it is 2 inches apart on the map? 2. If you walk from the library to the gym, how many feet would you have walked according to the map? 3. If you wanted to measure the distance from the front entrance to the back entrance of the school, how would you use the scale on the map?

Activity 2: Symbols and Legends Map: Give students a map of a fictional town with various symbols representing different locations such as parks, schools, and stores. Include a legend explaining what each symbol represents.

Questions: 1. What does the symbol for the park look like on the map? 2. How many schools are there in the town according to the legend? 3. If you wanted to find the nearest store to the park, which symbol would you look for on the map?

Activity 3: Analyzing Directions Map: Provide students with a map of a city with streets labeled and directions indicated (e.g. north, south, east, west). Include a compass rose to help students determine directions.

Questions: 1. If you wanted to go from Main Street to Elm Street, which direction would you be traveling? 2. How would you get from the park to the library using the directions on the map? 3. If you were at the intersection of 1st Avenue and 3rd Street, which direction would you need to go to reach the river?

These activities will help middle school students develop their map reading skills by practicing interpreting scales, symbols, and directions on different types of maps.
