Title: Exploring Peso Money
Objective: To introduce grade 1 learners to the concept of peso money and develop their understanding of its value and usage through a drill activity.
Materials: - Peso bills (various denominations) - Peso coins (various denominations) - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Flashcards (optional)
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin by asking the students if they have ever seen or used money before. Discuss their responses briefly.
- Explain that money is used to buy things we need or want. In the Philippines, the currency is called “peso.”
- Show the students different peso bills and coins, explaining that each has a different value.
- Peso Money Drill (15 minutes):
- Divide the students into small groups or pairs.
- Distribute the peso bills and coins among the groups.
- Explain that you will call out a specific amount, and the students need to find the combination of bills and coins that equals that amount.
- For example, you can say, “Find the combination of bills and coins that equals 25 pesos.” Encourage the students to work together to find the correct combination.
- Repeat this drill with different amounts, gradually increasing the difficulty level as the students become more comfortable.
- Whole Class Discussion (10 minutes):
- Gather the students back together as a whole class.
- Ask each group to share one combination they found for a specific amount.
- Write the combinations on the whiteboard or chart paper, discussing the different ways to make the same amount using different bills and coins.
- Use flashcards (if available) to reinforce the value of each peso bill and coin, showing the students the corresponding amount as you discuss the combinations.
- Conclusion (5 minutes):
- Summarize the activity by emphasizing the importance of understanding the value of peso money and how it can be used to make purchases.
- Encourage the students to practice using peso money in their daily lives, such as during pretend play or when helping their parents with small transactions.
Extension Activity: - Create a pretend store in the classroom where students can practice using peso money to buy items. - Provide worksheets or online games that allow students to practice counting and adding different peso bills and coins. - Invite a guest speaker, such as a bank teller or parent, to talk to the students about the importance of saving money and how banks work.
Note: Adjust the duration of each activity based on the attention span and needs of the students.
