Place value is a way of grouping numbers so that the value of each digit in a number can be understood. For example, if a student is trying to figure out what 973 means, they should start by understanding that the 9 in 973 means nine hundreds, the 7 means seven tens, and the 3 means three ones. Place value helps students understand how much each number is worth in relation to the others in the set.
