LESSON TITLE: An Introduction to Arc Welding
GOALS: 1. To introduce students to the basics of arc welding 2. To explain the safety and safety precautions needed when welding 3. To discuss the correct way to set up and operate a welding machine and use the welding equipment 4. To give students practice in welding in a safe environment
OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will be able to define arc welding. 2. Students will be able to identify safety hazards associated with arc welding. 3. Students will be able to set up and use a welding machine. 4. Students will be able to practice arc welding.
MATERIALS NEEDED: 1. Arc welding machine 2. Protective clothing 3. Welding helmet 4. Shielding gas 5. Welding gloves 6. Welding rods 7. Work clamp
PROCEDURE: 1. Introduction (5 minutes): a. Introduce students to the concept of arc welding and explain its importance both in manufacturing as well as in everyday life. b. Explain the safety concerns that come with arc welding, and stress the importance of using the right protective clothing and welding helmets. 2. Setup and Operation (10 minutes): a. Explain to the students how to properly set up a welding machine. b. Show the students how to adjust the welding machine settings depending on the type of material being welded. c. Show the students how to properly use the welding equipment including the shielding gas. 3. Practice Arc Welding (30 minutes): a. Introduce students to the different types of welding rods. b. Have the students set up the work clamp and make their first weld. c. Have the students practice welding on various materials, adjusting the welding machine settings as needed. 4. Review/Wrap Up (5 minutes): a. Review the safety precautions discussed during the lesson. b. Answer any questions that the students may have. c. Discuss the different techniques that are used in arc welding and review the different materials the students can weld.
ASSESSMENT: Student success can be assessed through the following rubric:
