Lesson Plan

Objective: Third graders will use vocabulary strategies and math to successfully complete a word problem.

Materials: -Whiteboard -Dry erase markers -Whiteboard eraser -Pencils -Paper -Classroom charts -Laptop -Projector

Vocabulary Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4a

Math Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1

Procedure:

1.Introduction (10 minutes): -Begin the lesson by asking students to provide examples of words they have seen in the past few days -Explain that students will be improving their vocabularies and math skills today -Announce that students will be solving word problems related to different math concepts

2.Activities (20 minutes): -Divide the class into small groups -Project a word problem to the whole class and have them read it aloud -Explain that each group must discuss the meaning of each word used in the problem and create a class chart with a definition for each word -Instruct the class to solve the word problem in pairs and record answers on paper -Post the solution on the whiteboard and discuss the correct way to solve the problem

3.Conclusion (10 minutes): -Review the class chart with all the words and their definitions -Discuss the importance of understanding the problem before they start solving it -Challenge students to solve more word problems on their own
