Activity: Adding Numbers using Peso Money

Objective: To help grade 1 learners practice adding numbers using peso money.

Materials needed: - Peso coins (various denominations) - Paper or whiteboard - Marker or pen

Instructions: 1. Begin by introducing the concept of adding numbers using peso money. Explain that just like we can add regular numbers, we can also add the values of peso coins to find the total amount.

  1. Show the learners different peso coins and their corresponding values. For example, a 1-peso coin, 5-peso coin, and 10-peso coin.

  2. Write a simple addition problem on the board or paper, such as “2-peso coin + 3-peso coin = ?”

  3. Ask the learners to count the value of each coin and then add them together to find the total. Encourage them to use the actual coins to help them visualize and understand the concept.

  4. Repeat this process with a few more addition problems, gradually increasing the difficulty as the learners become more comfortable with the concept. For example, “4-peso coin + 2-peso coin + 1-peso coin = ?”

  5. After practicing with a few addition problems, ask the learners to create their own addition problems using peso coins. They can write the problem on paper or the whiteboard and then solve it.

  6. Encourage the learners to work in pairs or small groups to solve each other’s addition problems. This will promote collaboration and peer learning.

  7. As a closing activity, have a class discussion where the learners share their addition problems and solutions. This will allow them to explain their thinking and reasoning to their classmates.

Extension: To further challenge the learners, you can introduce larger denominations of peso coins, such as 20-peso coins or 50-peso bills. This will require them to add larger numbers and practice carrying over when necessary.

Note: Ensure that the learners are supervised when using actual peso coins to avoid any choking hazards.
