Wealth is seen as a sign of status and power in The Great Gatsby. It is often used to gain access to exclusive lifestyles and experiences, and it is also a symbol of attaining the American Dream of excessive wealth. Despite its implications, the novel ultimately shows how wealth does not bring true happiness or a sense of fulfillment. Many characters suffer from their pursuit of material wealth and unhappiness is exposed in their use of it to try to buy love, security, status, and ultimately happiness.
