  1. Begin by having the student play and count quarter notes, focusing on the student accurately counting the rhythm and keeping a steady pulse.

  2. Once the student is comfortable and accurate with quarter notes, move to eighth notes by having the student clap along to a steady beat. Make sure the student understands the difference between the two different kinds of notes before moving on.

  3. Introduce the student to the concept of sixteenth notes by clapping along to rhythmic patterns composed of eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Explain how two sixteenth notes are equal to one eighth note.

  4. When the student understands the concept of sixteenth notes, assign them a piece or exercise of a single rhythmic pattern that requires counting and playing of sixteenth notes. Have the student clap along to the pattern and focus on accuracy and keeping the pulse steady.

  5. Once the student is comfortable with a single rhythmic pattern, assign them a piece or exercise of two or more different rhythms that requires switching between different rhythms that involve sixteenth notes. Focus on both accuracy with the rhythm and keeping a steady pulse.

  6. Make sure the student is moving at a steady pace and is able to accurately count and play the rhythms before progressing to a more challenging exercise or piece.

  7. Encourage the student to practice counting and performing sixteenth notes regularly in order to continue to gain accuracy and comfort with the more complex rhythms.
