The theoretical framework of this research is grounded in Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). This theory proposes that cognitions, behavior, and environment are all interconnected, and that behavior is shaped, not only by personal traits, but also the immediate environment (e.g., peers, partners, family). In this case, the environment is the acceptance level of autonomous vehicles in older adults. According to SCT, a person’s environmental contexts can essentially ‘activate’ certain beliefs, which consequently predict the behavior toward the situation being studied. Therefore, SCT could suggest that an individual’s knowledge, beliefs, and expectations about autonomous vehicles will be intertwined and that these expectations can predict the attitude towards or acceptance of autonomous vehicles in the older adult population. This theoretical framework links to social and cognitive psychology, which can be used to support this study.
