Lesson 1 Objective: To introduce students to the topic of Scottish Inventors and their importance to Scotland and the World Activities: • Brainstorm a list of inventions that students have heard of or use in their everyday lives • Have students research and read a list of famous Scottish inventors e.g. Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Telford, etc. (Resource: https://www.scottish-places.info/people/famousfirsts.html) • In pairs discuss the inventions of the famous Scottish inventors • Allow for a group discussion about why Scottish inventors are important • Students to create a poster outlining the famous Scottish inventors and there inventions Teacher Questions : • What famous Scottish inventors have you heard of? • What inventions of theirs have had an effect on the world? • Why are Scottish inventors important? Assessment Ideas : • Have students give a short report on the life of a famous Scottish inventor • Create a multiple-choice quiz to test knowledge from the lesson • Ask open-ended questions during discussion Plenary: • Ask students to share their posters with the class • As a class discuss the importance of Scottish inventors

Lesson 2 Objective: To explore further the invention that Alexander Graham Bell created Activities: • Split class into 2 groups • Have one group research and present on the invention of the telephone and its impact • Have the other group research and present on his invention of the Audiphone • Both groups to have to explain how each invention impacted the world • As a class discuss the advances in technology since Bell’s inventions • Take part in a role-play exercise in which each student will take the role of Bell and imagine if he had invented a modern invention such as a smartphone Teacher Questions: • What technology has been developed since Bell’s inventions? • How have Alexander Graham Bell’s inventions impacted our everyday lives? • What new inventions would Bell have created if he was alive today? Assessment Ideas : • Have students write a short essay comparing Bell’s inventions with modern technology • Have students create a presentation about Alexander Graham Bell • Assign short reports to compare Bell’s inventions with other well known inventors Plenary: • In pairs Students to create their own imagination of a modern invention that could be created • Have students share their ideas with the rest of the class

Lesson 3 Objective : To explore in further detail the importance of Scottish inventors and their impact on the world Activities : • Have students research a range of different famous Scottish inventors and their inventions • Place the students into groups and assign each group a Scottish inventor • Get the students to research and compile a presentation on the inventor and the importance of the invention • Get the students to debate the positive and negative impacts of the invention • Lead a class discussion on the importance of Scottish inventors Teacher Questions : • What have students learned about the Scottish inventors that they have been researching? • What have been the positive and negative impacts of the inventions that they have looked at? • What are the most significant inventions to come out of Scotland? Assessment Ideas : • Have students present their findings to the class • Design a multiple choice quiz on the inventions and the inventors • Get students to write an article about the importance of Scottish inventors and their impact on the world Plenary : • Summarise the key points made during the lesson • Ask the students to share one thing they have learned from the lesson

Lesson 4 Objective: To explore how other countries have been influenced by Scottish inventions Activities: • Have the students research past and present cases of Scottish inventions contributing to other countries • Discuss how Scotland’s inventions have impacted technology in other countries • Get students to review and analyze newspaper articles to find out how Scottish inventions have made a global impact • Conduct an online research task on different case studies of Scottish inventions Teacher Questions: • How have other countries been impacted by Scottish inventions? • What are some of the most influential inventions to have come out of Scotland? • What have Scottish invented helped to shape technology in other countries? Assessment Ideas: • Have students create a poster or infographic to summarise their research • Develop a timeline showing the progress of Scottish inventions over time • Develop a case study looking at how Scottish inventions have positively impacted a certain country Plenary: • Show a short clip about Scottish inventions • Reinforce the importance of Scottish inventors to the class and ask them to reflect on what they have learned

Lesson 5 Objective: To explore changes in technology since the Industrial Revolution Activities: • Have students take part in a discussion activities and debate the importance of the Industrial Revolution • Show a short video about changes in technology and ask students to compare and contrast the technology of the past and present • Get students to undertake an activity to create a Venn diagram comparing old and new inventions
• Encourage students to identify a pattern in the types of inventions created Teacher Questions : • How has technology evolved since the Industrial Revolution? •How have Scottish inventors contributed to this evolution in technology? • What have been the most influential inventions since the Industrial Revolution?
