Lesson 1: Introducing the Vikings
Objective: Students will be able to describe who the Vikings were and when they lived.
Content:
-Introduce the time period of the Vikings which was from 793-1066.
-Explain who the Vikings were and what their life was like.
-Explain the Viking’s religious beliefs and their lifestyle.
-Discuss why Vikings explored and settled in other parts of the world.
-Discuss the Viking’s physical characteristics and clothing.
Resources: -Teacher and student copies of a timeline of the historical events involving the Vikings. -Teacher-made models of Viking houses, boats, etc. -Videos, books, and other sources of information about the Vikings.
Lesson 2: Viking Society
Objective: Students will be able to discuss the structure of Viking society, their beliefs, and their customs.
Content:
-Discuss Viking society in terms of classes and roles (including slaves).
-Explain the Viking’s religion and beliefs in gods and goddesses.
-Discuss Viking customs and marriage practices.
-Explain the importance of laws and outcasting to the Vikings.
Resources: -Teacher and student copies of a handout describing Viking society in terms of classes, roles, and beliefs. -Videos showing traditional Viking customs and marriage practices.
Lesson 3: Viking Exploration
Objective: Students will be able to discuss why the Vikings explored and settle in other parts of the world.
Content:
-Discuss why the Vikings decided to explore and settle outside of Scandinavia.
-Explain where the Vikings travelled and what new things they learned.
-Describe the Viking’s conquests and colonization in other parts of the world.
-Describe some of the accomplishments of the Vikings.
Resources: -Maps of Scandinavia and Europe showing the Viking voyages. -Videos, books, and other sources of information about the Viking voyages and conquests.
Lesson 4: Viking Weapons and Tools
Objective: Students will be able to describe the weapons and tools used by the Vikings.
Content:
-Discuss the weapons and tools used by the Vikings.
-Explain how the Vikings used these tools in battle and everyday life.
-Demonstrate the use of Viking weapons and tools.
Resources: -Pictures and diagrams of the weapons and tools used by the Vikings. -Physical artifacts used by the Vikings (if available).
Lesson 5: Legacy of the Vikings
Objective: Students will be able to discuss the legacy of the Vikings and how they influenced modern society.
Content:
-Discuss the legacy of the Vikings and how they left their mark in Europe and the world.
-Explain how the Viking’s language, lifestyle, and technology influenced modern societies.
-Discuss the ways in which the Vikings still live on today through religion, language, and customs.
Resources: -Books, videos, and other sources of information about the legacy of the Vikings. -Teacher made a handout of significant Viking inventions and their impact on modern society.
