LESSON PLAN

Aims:

  1. To explain the basic structure of a theatre review.
  2. To understand the different elements to be included in a theatre review.
  3. To take clues from a performance to craft a review suitable for an audience of theatregoers.

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  1. Identify what needs to be included in a theatre review.
  2. Describe the purpose of a theatre review.
  3. Explain the different elements to be taken into account when writing a review.

Starter:

The class will watch a clip from a show on YouTube to discuss and review.

Main Activity:

  1. Give the class 10 minutes to respond to the clip, asking them to note down the following:

• What did you like about the clip? • What didn’t you like about the clip? • Who were the main characters and what were their relationships? • Which dramatic conventions were used in the clip? • What messages or lessons could be taken from the performance?

2.Construct a spider diagram as a class to discuss the various elements of the show, concentrating on the plot, theme, setting, characterization and staging.

  1. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group one element of the theatrical performance they just watched. Ask each group to come up with a list of things they would include in a review to discuss this element. This can range from scenic design, lighting and sound to performances, costume and effects.

Plenary:

Give the groups time to present their findings to the class and come up with a review as a whole. Give the class feedback in terms of what has been included, what could have been included, and what needs to be made more clear. The aim is to see how the whole class can construct a review that an audience of theatregoers could use to evaluate the show.

(Remainder of lesson to focus on marking the reviews, peer assessment and one on one teacher feedback with the group).
