LESSON PLAN
Aims - To understand the impacts of an eruption of White Island Volcano - To determine the consequences of such an event
Objectives - Students will be able to describe the effects of the White Island Volcano’s most recent eruption - Students will be able to recognize the short and long term impacts it has had on the local communities
Materials - A computer/laptop for each student to access the internet - Whiteboard/Smart board - Images of White Island - Examples of volcanic eruptions
Structure - Introduction (10 minutes): be discussed, such as the geology of the formation and its location. Images of the island should be shown to the class.
- Activities (45 minutes): Activity one: In small groups, students will research the most recent eruption of White Island Volcano, using the computers provided. They will take notes on the information they find.
Activity two: Each group will present to the class the findings they have discovered, which will be written up on the board.
Activity three: Once all the information has been discussed, the class will then discuss and list the short and long term impacts the eruption has had on local communities.
Activity four: To finish off, each student will have to form their own opinion on the event and discuss why they think this was the case.
Conclusion (5 minutes): The teacher will provide a summary of the lesson, highlighting the impacts of the White Island Volcano eruption and what should be done to prevent another eruption from occurring.
Evaluation (5 minutes): Students will be asked to complete an online survey about what they have learnt in the lesson and how it can be applied in the future.
