Materials: - Pictures of objects from the past (e.g., rotary phone, typewriter, record player) - Audio recording of children speaking to their grandmother about the past - Dialogue worksheet - Dates of technological advancements worksheet
Warm-up (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking students if they think life was different 100 years ago compared to today. - Discuss as a class what they think people used to have and what they used to do in the past. - Write their ideas on the board.
Activity 1: Objects from the Past (10 minutes): - Show the pictures of objects from the past to the students. - Ask them to identify the objects and share what they know about them. - Discuss as a class the purpose and usage of each object. - Play the audio recording of children speaking to their grandmother about the past. - Students should listen and check their ideas about the objects. - Discuss as a class whether the grandmother’s memories are happy or unhappy.
Activity 2: Complete the Dialogue (15 minutes): - Distribute the dialogue worksheet to the students. - In pairs, students will complete the dialogue using “used to” or “didn’t use to” to describe life in the past. - After completing the dialogue, students will role-play the conversation in pairs. - Monitor and provide assistance as needed.
Activity 3: Personality Traits and Comparison (10 minutes): - Discuss with the class the personality traits that the grandmother uses to describe people in the past. - Ask students to share their opinions on how different people are today compared to the past. - In pairs or small groups, students will compare people in the past with people today, discussing whether they were more or less adventurous, greedy, hard-working, intelligent, polite, punctual, selfish, and unsociable. - Students should provide reasons and examples to support their opinions.
Activity 4: Technological Advancements (10 minutes): - Show the dates of technological advancements worksheet to the students. - Discuss as a class when each item appeared and whether people in the past used to do or didn’t use to do certain activities related to those advancements. - Students can work individually or in pairs to complete the worksheet.
Activity 5: Role-play (10 minutes): - Students will continue the dialogue from Activity 2c in pairs. - They will role-play the conversation, incorporating their own ideas and experiences. - Encourage students to use the target language (used to, didn’t use to) and express their opinions about life in the past and present.
Conclusion (5 minutes): - Wrap up the lesson by having a class discussion about the similarities and differences between life 100 years ago and life today. - Ask students if they agree or disagree with the grandmother’s opinions and why. - Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson.
Homework: - Students will write a short paragraph comparing and contrasting life 100 years ago with life today, focusing on the aspects discussed in class.
