Knife crime is a serious issue in the UK today, and as such S1 health and wellbeing pupils should be aware of how to prevent it and what to do if it does happen.
-
Encourage pupils to make responsible decisions about carrying and using knives, making it clear that it is illegal to carry a knife, even for self-protection.
-
Educate pupils about the serious consequences of knife crime, such as jail time, legal costs, physical and emotional scars and the impact it can have on others.
-
Show pupils the support that is available if they have been affected by knife crime, such as counselling and legal advice.
-
Promote positive activities such as sports, music and art as an alternative to carrying a knife.
-
Discuss knife crime with pupils, to enable them to share their views and feelings, and understand the causes and effects of knife crime.
-
Develop problem solving and conflict resolution skills in young people, to help them understand how to deal with situations that may otherwise lead to knife crime.
-
Educate pupils on the importance of reporting any incidents of knife crime to the police.
