:
This lesson should introduce students to writing and interpreting chemical nomenclature.
Begin the lesson by having students create diagrams of molecules and ions using a model building set like molecular models or legos. Have students identify each atom by its symbol and give them practice writing out the corresponding chemical formula.
Then move on to teaching students how to name compounds and ions. Start by having students name simple molecules comprised of one type of atom, then progress to molecules containing two, three, and more types of atoms. Give examples of how to name each type of molecule, and ask students to practice naming molecules given their structural diagram.
Introduce the concept of common versus systematic naming, and ask students to decide which name to use in the given situation.
Finally, introduce students to the concepts of writing and interpreting chemical equations. Give students examples and have them practice writing out and balancing chemical equations.
End the lesson by having students complete a practice worksheet reviewing each of the components of chemical nomenclature.
