Introduction
Welcome to our lesson on shapes! In this lesson, we will be learning about basic shapes including triangles, squares, circles, and more. We’ll learn different ways to describe a shape, how to draw the shape and what objects are appropriate to use each shape.
About Shapes
Shapes are an important way to describe, draw and recognize objects around us. We use shapes in a variety of contexts to describe, construct, and understand our world.
Shapes come in many varieties and can be broadly categorized as two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Two-dimensional shapes have length and width and can be flat or curved. They have no volume or depth. Three-dimensional shapes are objects with three dimensions, meaning they have a length, a width, and a depth.
Common two-dimensional shapes include squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, hexagons, and other polygons. Common three-dimensional shapes include spheres, cubes, cylinders, pyramids, and others.
Types of Shapes
Triangles
Triangles are two-dimensional shapes with three straight sides. The three sides can be equal or unequal in length and the angle between any two of the sides will always be less than 180 degrees.
Triangles are often used to represent strength or stability.
Squares
Squares are two-dimensional shapes with four equal sides. The four sides meet at four right angles, making a square shape.
Squares are often used to represent balance or stability.
Circles
Circles are two-dimensional shapes where all the points on the edge of the shape are the same distance from the center. A circle does not have any sides or angles.
Circles are often used to represent continuity or perfection.
Other Shapes
Other shapes include ovals, rectangles, diamonds, stars, hearts, and other polygons.
Each of these shapes can be used to represent a variety of ideas. Hearts are often used to represent love, while stars are often used to represent luck or fame.
Activity
Create a collage of the basic shapes. Collect pieces of paper in the shapes of circles, squares, triangles, and other shapes. Arrange the shapes on a flat surface in any pattern you like. Once you have a design you like, glue the shapes onto a sheet of paper or cardboard.
Congratulations! You have just made a basic shapes collage.
