  • Case studies on migration crises such as the Syrian refugee crisis and the Central American migrant caravan.

Procedure:

Week 1: Introduction to Migration

Day 1: Introduction to the topic of migration. Define key terms such as migration, refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants. Discuss the different types of migration and their causes.

Day 2: Analyze the consequences of migration for both the countries of origin and destination. Discuss the economic, social, and political impacts of migration.

Day 3: Examine the role of international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration in addressing migration issues. Discuss the different approaches to migration governance.

Week 2: Responses to Migration

Day 4: Analyze the responses of states to migration. Discuss the different policies and measures that states use to manage migration, such as border controls, visa regimes, and deportation.

Day 5: Examine the role of civil society and non-governmental organizations in responding to migration. Discuss the different forms of activism and advocacy for migrants’ rights.

Day 6: Analyze the role of media in shaping public opinion on migration. Discuss the different narratives and discourses on migration in the media.

Week 3: Case Studies on Migration Crises

Day 7: Analyze the Syrian refugee crisis. Discuss the causes and consequences of the crisis, as well as the responses of different actors such as states, international organizations, and civil society.

Day 8: Analyze the Central American migrant caravan. Discuss the causes and consequences of the caravan, as well as the responses of different actors such as states, international organizations, and civil society.

Day 9: Evaluate the different perspectives on migration. Discuss the different ideological, political, and cultural factors that shape people’s views on migration.

Assessment:

  • Class participation and engagement in discussions and activities (30%)
  • Written reflection on the causes and consequences of migration (20%)
  • Group presentation on a case study of migration crisis (30%)
  • Final essay on the different responses to migration (20%)
