Materials: • Textbook • Overhead projector • Anglo-Saxon artifacts (optional)
Anticipatory Set: Begin the lesson by asking students to brainstorm everything they already know about the Anglo-Saxons.
Procedure: • Begin by discussing the major events of the Anglo-Saxon period. Explain the Viking invasions, the beginnings of Christianity, and Alfred the Great’s contribution to the period. Explain the differences between the Anglo-Saxons, Celts, and Romans.
• Ask students to brainstorm possible cultural and artistic contributions of the period. Discuss the importance of the oral tradition, epic poems such as Beowulf and The Dream of the Rood, and illuminated manuscripts such as the Lindisfarne Gospels.
• (Optional) Pass around Anglo-Saxon artifacts and discuss their uses, importance, and symbolism.
• Discuss the art of Anglo-Saxon cultures, including jewelry and weaponry. Ask students to draw simple Anglo-Saxon designs and explain their symbolism.
Closure: Summarize the major points that were discussed throughout the lesson. Have the students share what they learned and how it affects the way they understand the Anglo-Saxon period.
