Title: Checking In at the Hotel

Grade Level: Adult learners (beginner level)

Objective: - To enable learners to effectively check in at a hotel by practicing key vocabulary and phrases related to hotel check-in procedures. - To enhance learners’ listening and speaking skills through role-play activities.

Materials: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Handouts with hotel check-in dialogues - Flashcards with hotel-related vocabulary - Role-play cards

Procedure:

  1. Warm-up (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking learners about their experiences staying in hotels. Encourage them to share any positive or negative experiences they have had. - Write down any hotel-related vocabulary that learners mention on the whiteboard or flipchart.

  2. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes): - Introduce key vocabulary related to hotel check-in, such as reservation, room key, ID/passport, credit card, check-in form, etc. - Use flashcards to present the vocabulary, and elicit the meanings from the learners. - Practice pronunciation and drilling of the vocabulary words.

  3. Listening Activity (15 minutes): - Distribute handouts with hotel check-in dialogues to the learners. - Play an audio recording of a hotel check-in conversation. - Ask learners to listen and follow along with the dialogue on their handouts. - After the recording, discuss the dialogue as a class, focusing on the key phrases and vocabulary used.

  4. Role-play Activity (20 minutes): - Divide the class into pairs or small groups. - Provide each group with a role-play card that outlines a hotel check-in scenario. - Instruct learners to take turns playing the roles of the hotel receptionist and the guest. - Encourage learners to use the vocabulary and phrases they have learned to complete the role-play. - Monitor the groups and provide feedback and assistance as needed.

  5. Group Discussion (10 minutes): - Bring the class back together and facilitate a discussion about the role-play scenarios. - Ask learners to share their experiences and challenges during the activity. - Encourage learners to provide suggestions for improving their performance in future hotel check-in situations.

  6. Wrap-up (5 minutes): - Summarize the key points covered in the lesson, emphasizing the vocabulary and phrases related to hotel check-in. - Provide learners with a handout or reference sheet containing the vocabulary and phrases covered in the lesson. - Encourage learners to practice the dialogues and role-plays outside of the classroom to further reinforce their skills.
