Title: Counting in 5s

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Objective: - Students will be able to count forward and backward by 5s up to 100. - Students will be able to identify patterns in counting by 5s. - Students will be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems involving counting by 5s.

Materials: - Counting by 5s chart (pre-made or created by the teacher) - Counting by 5s flashcards - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or chalk - Manipulatives (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) - Begin the lesson by asking students if they know how to count by 5s. Write the numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, etc., on the board. - Discuss with students that counting by 5s means adding 5 to the previous number each time. - Explain that today, they will learn how to count by 5s up to 100.

  2. Counting by 5s Chart (10 minutes) - Show the students a counting by 5s chart and explain how it works. - Start counting by 5s together as a class, pointing to each number on the chart as you go. - After reaching 100, count backward by 5s from 100 to 0. - Have students take turns coming up to the chart and pointing to the numbers as the class counts together.

  3. Counting by 5s Flashcards (10 minutes) - Distribute counting by 5s flashcards to each student. - Instruct students to work in pairs or small groups and take turns showing a flashcard to their partner/group. - The partner/group must say the number on the flashcard and then count forward or backward by 5s from that number. - Rotate flashcards among the students, allowing everyone to have a chance to practice.

  4. Identifying Patterns (10 minutes) - Write the numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, etc., on the board. - Ask students to identify any patterns they notice in the numbers. - Guide the discussion to help students understand that the ones digit always ends in 0 or 5, and the tens digit increases by 1 each time. - Have students practice identifying patterns by giving them a number and asking them to identify the next two numbers in the sequence.

  5. Addition and Subtraction (15 minutes) - Explain to students that counting by 5s can also help them solve addition and subtraction problems. - Write simple addition and subtraction problems involving counting by 5s on the board, such as 5 + 5, 10 - 5, 15 + 5, etc. - Have students solve the problems individually or in pairs, using the counting by 5s method. - Allow students to share their answers and explain their thinking.

  6. Conclusion (5 minutes) - Review the concept of counting by 5s and the patterns students identified. - Ask students to share one thing they learned about counting by 5s. - Provide positive feedback and reinforce the importance of practice in mastering counting by 5s.

Extension Activity: - Provide manipulatives, such as counting cubes or coins, for students to practice counting by 5s in a hands-on way. - Challenge students to create their own counting by 5s charts or flashcards to reinforce their understanding of the concept.
