Title: Learning Manners: Being Polite and Respectful

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Objective: - Students will understand the importance of good manners and how they contribute to positive social interactions. - Students will learn and practice basic manners, such as saying “please” and “thank you,” using polite words, and showing respect to others.

Materials: - Chart paper - Markers - Picture cards depicting different manners - Role-play props (optional) - Manners worksheet (downloaded from an educational website)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what manners are and why they are important.
    • Write their responses on the chart paper.
    • Explain that manners are the polite and respectful ways we behave towards others, and they help us build positive relationships.
  2. Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Show picture cards depicting different manners (e.g., saying “please,” sharing, listening attentively, etc.).
    • Ask students to identify each manner and explain why it is important.
    • Discuss how these manners make others feel and how they contribute to a positive classroom environment.
  3. Role-play (15 minutes):
    • Divide the class into small groups.
    • Assign each group a different scenario where good manners are needed (e.g., sharing toys, asking for help, saying sorry, etc.).
    • Provide props if available (e.g., toys, hats, etc.) to make the role-play more engaging.
    • Allow each group to perform their role-play in front of the class.
    • After each performance, discuss the manners displayed and ask the class how they could have improved.
  4. Manners Worksheet (15 minutes):
    • Distribute the manners worksheet to each student.
    • Instruct them to complete the worksheet by matching the pictures with the correct manners.
    • Walk around the classroom to provide assistance and answer any questions.
  5. Conclusion (5 minutes):
    • Gather the students back together and review the importance of good manners.
    • Ask students to share one new thing they learned about manners today.
    • Emphasize that practicing good manners can make everyone feel happy and respected.

Extension Activity: - Encourage students to create their own manners booklets, where they draw pictures and write about different manners they have learned. - Have a manners-themed dress-up day, where students come to school dressed as characters who display good manners (e.g., a polite prince/princess, a respectful superhero, etc.).

Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during discussions and role-plays. - Review completed manners worksheets to assess understanding and matching accuracy.
