Title: Planning a Fantasy Story

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Subject: Language Arts

Duration: 60 minutes

Objectives: 1. Students will be able to identify the key elements of a fantasy story. 2. Students will be able to brainstorm and plan their own fantasy story. 3. Students will be able to create a plot outline for their fantasy story.

Materials: - Chart paper - Markers - Story planning graphic organizer (downloadable from the internet or create your own) - Pencils - Colored pencils or markers (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
    • Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever read or heard a fantasy story. Discuss some popular fantasy stories or movies they may be familiar with.
    • Explain that today, they will be learning how to plan their own fantasy story.
  2. Elements of a Fantasy Story (10 minutes)
    • Display a chart paper and divide it into four sections: Characters, Setting, Plot, and Magic.
    • Discuss each section and ask students to provide examples of what could be included in each category.
    • Write down their responses on the chart paper.
  3. Brainstorming (15 minutes)
    • Distribute the story planning graphic organizer to each student.
    • Instruct students to brainstorm ideas for their fantasy story using the elements discussed earlier.
    • Encourage creativity and imagination.
    • Circulate around the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.
  4. Plot Outline (20 minutes)
    • Once students have brainstormed their ideas, instruct them to choose one idea to develop into a plot for their story.
    • Explain the concept of a plot and its components (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution).
    • Model how to create a plot outline using a sample idea from the brainstorming session.
    • Instruct students to use their graphic organizer to create a plot outline for their own fantasy story.
    • Encourage students to include the key elements of a plot in their outline.
  5. Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes)
    • Allow students to share their plot outlines with a partner or in small groups.
    • Encourage constructive feedback and suggestions.
    • Ask students to reflect on the process of planning a fantasy story and share one thing they learned or found interesting.
  6. Conclusion (5 minutes)
    • Summarize the main points of the lesson.
    • Remind students to keep their graphic organizers and plot outlines for future reference when writing their fantasy stories.
    • Encourage students to continue exploring their ideas and imagination.

Extension Activity: Students can use their plot outlines to write their own fantasy stories. They can also create illustrations or book covers for their stories using colored pencils or markers.
