Objectives

  1. Identify and classify living things in the environment.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic needs of living things.

Materials

  • Images of living things (plants, animals, etc.)
  • Worksheets
  • Chalkboard
  • Pens/Pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Have the students brainstorm words that describe a living thing. Discuss the various characteristics and how they differ from non-living things.

Instruction (20 minutes)

  1. Introduce basic terminology and concepts related to living things, such as what is a living thing and the different types of living things (plants, animals, etc.). Use the images to help discuss the various characteristics of living things.

  2. Explain basic needs of living things. Discuss how certain needs are essential to survival and how different living things may have different needs.

  3. Give out worksheets and have students independently work on classifying living things into groups based on their characteristics.

Practice (20 minutes)

  1. Have students work in pairs to identify living things in the environment.

  2. Ask the students to discuss in the groups of two, their observations and the basic needs of the identified living things.

  3. Give out flashcards with pictures of living things and have them take turns to classify them into the different groups. The other student in the group can help by providing support or advice if needed.

Closure (5 minutes)

Recap the main points of the lesson and talk about what students learned. Give out stickers or stamps to reward the students for their work.

Evaluation

Collect the worksheets to assess student understanding of the lesson. Have the students answer a few questions about the lesson on the worksheets to make sure they retained the information presented.
