Lesson 1: Introduction to Helpers (1 class period)
- Begin the lesson by asking students to share who helps them at home and in their community. Write their responses on chart paper.
- Show pictures of different helpers and ask students to identify them. Discuss their roles and contributions.
- Read a picture book about a specific helper, such as a firefighter or a police officer. Discuss the story and ask students to share what they learned about the helper.
- Engage students in a class discussion about why helpers are important in our community. Emphasize the importance of showing gratitude and respect towards helpers.
Lesson 2: Appreciating Different Helpers (1-2 class periods)
- Review the different helpers discussed in the previous lesson.
- Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a different helper (e.g., doctor, teacher, mail carrier).
- Provide each group with drawing materials and construction paper.
- In their groups, students will create a poster or collage depicting their assigned helper and their contributions to the community.
- After completing their artwork, each group will present their poster to the class, explaining the role and importance of their assigned helper.
Lesson 3: Expressing Gratitude (1 class period)
- Review the different helpers discussed in the previous lessons.
- Discuss the importance of expressing gratitude towards helpers.
- Provide each student with a piece of construction paper and drawing materials.
- Instruct students to create a thank-you card for a helper of their choice. They can draw a picture and write a simple message expressing their gratitude.
- Allow students to share their thank-you cards with the class or exchange them with their classmates.
Extension Activity: Invite a local helper, such as a firefighter or a police officer, to visit the classroom and talk about their role in the community. Students can ask questions and express their appreciation directly.
Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during class discussions and group activities. - Review students’ artwork and thank-you cards to assess their understanding of different helpers and their contributions. - Conduct informal discussions to gauge students’ understanding of the importance of helpers in their daily lives.
