Materials: - Copies of a short story or novel excerpt with well-defined characters - Chart paper and markers - Sticky notes - Character analysis graphic organizer - Writing materials

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by asking students what they think makes a character interesting in a story.
    • Discuss the importance of characters in a story and how they drive the plot.
    • Introduce the concept of character analysis and explain that today they will be exploring characters in a story.
  2. Pre-Reading Activity (10 minutes):
    • Show students the cover of the story or novel excerpt and ask them to make predictions about the characters based on the cover.
    • Have students share their predictions with a partner or in small groups.
    • Discuss the predictions as a whole class and generate a list of questions they have about the characters.
  3. Reading and Character Analysis (20 minutes):
    • Distribute copies of the story or novel excerpt to each student.
    • Instruct students to read the assigned text silently or aloud, focusing on the characters.
    • As they read, have students use sticky notes to mark any interesting or important details about the characters.
    • After reading, ask students to share their sticky notes and discuss the character traits, motivations, and actions they noticed.
  4. Whole Class Discussion (15 minutes):
    • Create a character analysis chart on the chart paper, labeling columns for character names, traits, motivations, and actions.
    • Guide a discussion where students contribute their observations about the characters, and record their responses on the chart.
    • Encourage students to support their ideas with evidence from the text.
  5. Small Group Activity (15 minutes):
    • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a character analysis graphic organizer.
    • Instruct students to choose one character from the story and complete the graphic organizer, filling in the character’s traits, motivations, and actions.
    • Encourage students to discuss and debate their ideas within their groups, using evidence from the text to support their claims.
  6. Individual Reflection and Connection (10 minutes):
    • Have students individually write a short paragraph reflecting on the character they analyzed and how they can relate to or learn from that character.
    • Encourage students to make personal connections to the character’s experiences, emotions, or actions.
  7. Conclusion (5 minutes):
    • Ask a few students to share their reflections with the class.
    • Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson.
    • Emphasize the importance of understanding characters in order to fully engage with a story.

Extension Activity: - Students can create a character profile for one of the characters, including a physical description, personality traits, and a short biography. - Students can write a short story or scene from the perspective of one of the characters, exploring their thoughts and feelings in a specific situation.
