Title: Celebrating Birthdays
Level: Intermediate
Objective: By the end of the session, students will be able to talk about their own and others’ birthdays, describe birthday traditions in their culture, and express wishes and congratulations.
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with birthday-related vocabulary and expressions.
Time: 60 minutes
Procedure:
-
Warm-up (10 minutes) - Ask students to share their birth dates and the year they were born. - Write the dates on the board and ask if anyone has a birthday coming up soon. - Ask students if they like celebrating their birthdays and why or why not. - Introduce the topic of birthdays and explain that today’s session will focus on how people celebrate birthdays in different cultures.
-
Vocabulary and expressions (10 minutes) - Distribute the handouts with birthday-related vocabulary and expressions. - Ask students to read and match the words with their meanings. - Go over the answers and ask students to practice saying the words and expressions aloud.
-
Cultural comparison (20 minutes) - Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a country or culture to research. - Ask the groups to find out how birthdays are celebrated in their assigned culture, including traditions, food, gifts, and songs. - After 10 minutes, have each group present their findings to the class. - Encourage the class to ask questions and compare the different birthday customs.
-
Role-play (15 minutes) - Ask students to pair up and take turns pretending it’s their partner’s birthday. - The first student should ask the second student how they plan to celebrate their birthday, and the second student should respond with their plans and preferences. - Then, the first student should give a birthday gift and wish the second student a happy birthday, using the vocabulary and expressions from the handout. - Switch roles and repeat the activity.
-
Wrap-up (5 minutes) - Ask students to share one thing they learned about birthday celebrations in another culture. - Review the vocabulary and expressions from the handout and ask if anyone has any questions or doubts. - Wish the students a happy birthday in advance or belatedly, depending on their birth dates.
Assessment: The teacher will assess the students’ participation in the group discussion, their ability to use the vocabulary and expressions in the role-play, and their comprehension of the cultural differences in birthday celebrations.
