Title: Words Ending in -ing

Objective: Students will learn the spelling rule for words that end in -ing when the root word ends in -e. They will practice applying this rule by spelling and using words correctly in sentences.

Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or chalk - Spelling word cards (hope, rumble, explode, create, make, ride, run, put, hop, win, hug, forget) - Sentence strips or paper for sentence writing activity

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) - Begin the lesson by asking students if they know any words that end in -ing. Write their responses on the board. - Explain that today’s lesson will focus on words that end in -ing, specifically when the root word ends in -e. - Tell students that when the root word ends in -e, we usually drop the -e and add -ing to form the word.

  2. Spelling Rule Explanation (10 minutes) - Write the spelling rule on the board: “If the root word ends in -e, take off the -e and add -ing.” - Provide examples using the words from the spelling word cards: hope (hoping), rumble (rumbling), explode (exploding), create (creating), make (making), ride (riding), run (running), put (putting), hop (hopping), win (winning), hug (hugging), forget (forgetting). - Have students repeat the rule and examples after you.

  3. Spelling Practice (15 minutes) - Distribute the spelling word cards to students. - Call out a word, and have students spell it aloud using the spelling rule. Repeat this process for several words. - Encourage students to help each other if they are struggling with a word. - After practicing spelling the words aloud, have students write each word on their own paper.

  4. Sentence Writing Activity (15 minutes) - Explain to students that they will now practice using the words in sentences. - Distribute sentence strips or paper to each student. - Instruct students to choose five words from the spelling word cards and write a sentence for each word, using the word correctly. - Encourage students to be creative and use descriptive language in their sentences. - After completing their sentences, have students share their sentences with a partner or the whole class.

  5. Wrap-up and Review (5 minutes) - Review the spelling rule and examples with the class. - Ask students if they have any questions or need further clarification on the rule. - Congratulate students on their hard work and improvement in spelling words that end in -ing.

Extension Activity: - Have students create a word search puzzle using the words from the spelling word cards. They can exchange puzzles with a partner and solve them. - Encourage students to find additional words that follow the same spelling rule and add them to their word search puzzles.
