Grade Level: Kindergarten
Objective: - Students will be able to recognize and read a set of sight words. - Students will be able to use sight words in simple sentences.
Materials: - Flashcards with sight words - Whiteboard and markers - Sentence strips - Small whiteboards and markers (optional) - Sight word worksheets (optional)
Procedure:
-
Introduction (5 minutes) - Begin the lesson by explaining to the students that sight words are words that they should be able to recognize instantly without sounding them out. - Show the flashcards with a few sight words and ask the students if they recognize any of them. - Discuss the importance of sight words in reading and how they help in building fluency.
-
Introduce Sight Words (10 minutes) - Write the first sight word on the whiteboard and say it aloud. - Have the students repeat the word after you. - Use the flashcards to show the word again and ask the students to read it aloud. - Repeat this process for a few more sight words, gradually increasing the difficulty level.
-
Sight Word Practice (15 minutes) - Divide the class into small groups or pairs. - Give each group a set of flashcards with sight words. - Instruct the students to take turns showing a flashcard to their partner/group and asking them to read the word aloud. - Encourage the students to help each other if someone is struggling with a word. - Circulate around the room to provide assistance and feedback.
-
Sentence Building (15 minutes) - Write a simple sentence on the whiteboard using one of the sight words. - Read the sentence aloud and ask the students to identify the sight word. - Explain that sight words are often used in sentences to help make meaning. - Distribute sentence strips to each student and have them write a sentence using a sight word. - Encourage creativity and remind them to use proper punctuation and capitalization. - Allow students to share their sentences with the class.
-
Sight Word Review Game (10 minutes) - Play a sight word review game to reinforce learning. - Divide the class into two teams. - Write a sight word on the whiteboard and have one student from each team race to find the flashcard with that word. - The first student to find the correct flashcard earns a point for their team. - Repeat this process with different sight words until all students have had a chance to participate.
-
Conclusion (5 minutes) - Review the sight words learned during the lesson. - Ask the students to share one thing they learned about sight words. - Provide positive feedback and encourage continued practice at home.
Extension Activities: - Provide sight word worksheets for students to complete individually. - Use small whiteboards for students to practice writing sight words. - Create a sight word scavenger hunt where students have to find and read sight words hidden around the classroom.
